About the USA Fencing classification system

The USA Fencing classification system is used to rank fencers based on their skill level and competitive experience. There are six classifications in total: U (unrated), E, D, C, B and A (highest).

Fencers start as U-rated and can earn points through competing in sanctioned tournaments. The points are awarded based on the level of fencers already in the tournament. The higher the level, the higher the classifications that get awarded.

Fencers can earn classifications independently in each of the three weapons: Foil, Epee, and Sabre. The classification serves as a measure of a fencer’s progress in the sport, also used for the initial seeding in tournaments. The classification is used along with the year it was earned for seeding purposes. For example, a B13 would be ranked above a B12, who would be ranked above a C13.

Your classification drops one letter if it’s not renewed within four years. For example, at the end of the 2013-2014 season, a C10 would become a D14.
